Preparing for Your Appointment

For the success of your appointment, please have the following ready before arrival:1. A bathroom or powder room with access to a bathtub or large basin sink, that preferably with a door that closes. The space should be separate from other pets and heavy household activity.
2. Please remove any litter boxes from the chosen area.
3. (Optional) set out two large towels that can be used during the appointment. I always bring towels with me to appointments but have found that using towels that have a familiar sent on them is more calming for the cat after their bath.
4. Your cat must to be safely contained in a crate or carrier prior to arrival.
I do not chase, catch, or retrieve cats that are hiding at the time of the appointment.
If your cat is not properly contained upon arrival, the appointment may need to be rescheduled.
A calm, controlled environment from the start helps reduce stress, keeps your cat as comfortable as possible throughout the appointment, and supports more successful grooming visits in the future.

Appointment Day

Once arrived I will begin with a brief visual and hands-on assessment of your cat’s coat, skin, overall condition, and temperament. If I find significant matting, skin irritation, fleas, injuries, or anything else that may affect the groom, service plan, or pricing that was not mentioned or known prior, I will discuss it with you before proceeding and adjustments can be made. You are more than welcome to be in the room during the appointment but I ask that you keep the handling to me but giving your cat encouraging pets and sweet words of affirmation are always welcome.
If you chose not to be in the room during the appointment that is perfectly fine as well. If you happen to hear some "protesting" from your cat during the groom, don't be alarmed. All grooming appointments are approached with patience and safety in mind. If your cat requires multiple visits to safely get their grooming needs met, thats what will happen. I will NEVER put your cat through unneeded stress just so I can "finish" the groom. We want positive outcomes so future appointments go well.
Eevery cat is handled at their individual comfort level. Some cats need extra breaks, slower pacing, or modified handling techniques which is always taken into consideration.

About

About Practical CatsPractical Cats was founded on a simple belief: professional cat grooming should be accessible, individualized, and as stress-free as possible for both cats and the people who love them.Long before becoming a professional cat groomer, I spent more than a decade immersed in feline rescue, fostering, Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), and volunteer work with organizations including Austin Humane Society, Austin Pets Alive, and C.A.P.S. in Houston. Those experiences gave me a deep understanding of feline behavior, body language, and the importance of earning a cat’s trust through patience, respect, and thoughtful handling. My approach to grooming is built on feline-specific training through the National Cat Groomers Institute and guided by one principle: no two cats should be groomed the same way. Every appointment is tailored to the individual cat—their temperament, health, coat condition, previous experiences, and comfort level. Sometimes that means working efficiently to prevent overstimulation. Other times it means slowing down because patience is the safest approach. Knowing the difference is just as important as knowing how to groom.Through both rescue and grooming, I’ve seen the same challenge repeat itself time and time again. For many cats, the most stressful part of grooming isn’t the groom itself—it’s everything that comes before it. Being removed from a familiar place, placed in a carrier, riding in the car, and arriving somewhere filled with unfamiliar people, animals, sounds, and smells can leave some cats overwhelmed before their appointment even begins. That doesn’t make them “difficult” cats, nor does it mean sedation is their only option. Many simply benefit from a quieter environment, a calmer pace, and an approach tailored to their individual needs. That’s why I bring the grooming salon to them.By grooming cats in the comfort of their own home, many of the unnecessary stressors associated with traditional grooming are eliminated, allowing cats to remain in the environment where they feel safest while still receiving professional, high-quality grooming care.I also believe owner education is an important part of every appointment. Helping families recognize early signs of matting, understand coat maintenance, monitor changes in their cat’s health, and better interpret feline behavior can make a meaningful difference in a cat’s comfort and long-term well-being.My goal is simple: to make professional cat grooming more accessible, less stressful, and more practical for cats and the people who love them.Practical Cats Grooming Owner and Your New Groomer - Kelly
